2025-03-31Google has released its watermarking artificial intelligence, or AI, text tool. The technology giant’s SynthID is a tool developed by Google DeepMind, the firm’s AI laboratory.“SynthID is a technology from Google DeepMind that watermarks and identifies AI-generated content by embedding digital watermarks directly into AI-generated images, audio, text or video. SynthID Text has been open-sourced to make watermarking for text generation available to developers,” the tech giant wrote in a post on its blog dedicated to developers.MIT Technology Review states watermarking works by “inserting hidden patterns in AI-generated text, which allow computers to detect that the text comes from an AI system.”Even though it has become the go-to solution for preventing AI-generated misinformation and plagiarism, Google states in the blog post the algorithm is currently on Gemini and Gemini Advance because “there is concern that it could contribute to misinformation and misattribution problems.”It added that SynthID Text is “not designed to directly stop motivated adversaries from causing harm. However, it can make it harder to use AI-generated content for malicious purposes, and it can be combined with other approaches to give better coverage across content types and platforms.”It is, however, robust when “cropping pieces of text, modifying a few words or mild paraphrasing.”
2025-04-24Who obfuscated their house a decade ago will have to request it once more, if they still want to. Satellite images and outdated Street View photographs used to not go together nicely, making a tram stop in front of Berlin Central Station fully disappear just until today (new above, old below) The update to Street View was direly needed. As we covered in April 2022, Street View in Germany is hopelessly outdated, with many streets and buildings not recognizable. Google Germany itself acknowledged as much in its blog post, showing how its Munich offices didn't even exist at all in the 2008 Street View images that were still live at the time of the first blog post. At the same time, Street View cars could still be seen on German roads throughout all these years, but the images were never published and only used to update Google Maps with more accurate house numbers, crossings, traffic lights, and lanes. In the years since Google Street View stopped updating Germany, a lot has changed. Apple successfully and quietly launched Look Around in the country, its version of Street View for Apple Maps. A representative study cited by Google from May 2023 also shows that more than 90% of Germans have a positive or very positive reception of Street View, so this time around, Google might just be successful with Street View in the country. UPDATE: 2023/07/25 04:58 EST BY MANUEL VONAU Some Street View imagery is now live The article has been updated to reflect that some of the promised Street View imagery is now live. Thanks: Anna
2025-04-08Liberal-leaning newspaper The Washington Post has created a web browser plugin that allows users to fact check tweets from President-elect Donald Trump in real time.According to the Post, their new Google Chrome browser extension will "slip a bit more context" into Trump's tweets. From the Google Chrome store:Donald Trump's primary means of communicating with the public is his Twitter account. Unfortunately, his tweets aren't always entirely accurate, by mistake or by design. The Washington Post's Fix team has decided to help ensure that the public receives the most accurate possible information by creating this extension, which will add more context or corrections to things that Trump tweets. While the plugin is admittedly still in its early stages, the Post says the plugin should allow Twitter users — who have the plugin installed — to see more "context" on Trump's tweets without having to search the internet for specific a story. Image source: Screenshot/The Washington Post Image source: Screenshot/The Washington PostEssentially, the plugin allows the liberal publication to fact check Trump's tweets in near real time. We'll see how that goes over.
