In the previous chapters, you learned how to design workflows in the Workflow Editor. However, EasyMorph Desktop can do more, besides designing and running data automation workflows. This and the following chapters explain what else you can do in the Desktop application and the extra capabilities you get when your Desktop is linked to EasyMorph Server. Application bar EasyMorph Desktop is effectively a suite of integrated applications bundled into one Windows executable. You can switch between the applications using the application bar — a narrow vertical pane at the left side. File Manager In this chapter, we will talk about File Manager, one of the apps built in EasyMorph Desktop. The other applications are explained later in this tutorial. EasyMorph Desktop has a built-in File Manager for browsing local and remote folders, uploading and downloading files, and performing other operations with files and folders (explained in more detail below). The File Manager is available even in standalone Desktop installations and doesn't require EasyMorph Server to operate. To open File Manager, click the respective icon in the application bar located along the right side of the application. Locations A location is a local folder or a remote folder — i.e., a folder in a remote file service such as SFTP, S3, SharePoint, Google Drive, etc. To work with a remote location, you will need to create and authorize a respective connector in the connector repository. All file and folder manipulations with the remote location will be done using this connector. A remote location can also be a public folder in EasyMorph Server (if you have configured the Server Link in your Desktop). There can be multiple locations open at the same time in File Manager (see screenshot below). To open a new location, press the "Open location" button above the list of locations. To switch to an already open location, click it in the list of open locations. When a location is open, you can browse its files and sub-folders as you would do it in Windows Explorer. To upload or download one or more files, select them in the current location, and then drag them to an open location. Alternatively, press the "Upload" (or "Download") button on the toolbar. When you drag files from a local folder to a remote folder, that's uploading. When you drag files from a remote folder to a local folder, that's downloading. Currently, in File Manager, it's not possible to copy files directly between two remote locations. However, it can be done by downloading them to a local folder first, and then uploading from the local folder to the desired remote location. In EasyMorph imported and calculated values can be of one of the following types: Number Text Boolean Error Empty A table column in EasyMorph can contain a mix of values of any type. For instance, text values and numbers can be mixed in the same column. You can guess a value's type by looking at its alignment in the datagrid. In tables, text is always aligned left, while numbers are always aligned right. That's how you can distinguish if a number is indeed a number, and not a text value consisting of digits. Booleans are either TRUE or FALSE, aligned to the middle. Errors are always red. Empty values have a very light gray background. Text Text values in EasyMorph are text strings in the (UTF-8 encoding). To concatenate text strings, use the ampersand (&). In expressions, text constants should be wrapped either in single or in double quotes. For instance: 'Easy' & "Morph" replace('03-2016', '-', '/') To deal with single quotes, use double quotes and vice versa. replace('"ABC"', '"', "'") Numbers Numbers are either integer or decimal numbers with a fixed decimal point. Floating point numbers and numbers in the exponential notation are not supported. The effective range for numbers in EasyMorph is approximately (-7.9 x 1028 to 7.9 x 1028) / (100 to 28) which is 28-29 significant digits with or without decimal point between them. Dates Notice there is no dedicated type for dates in EasyMorph. Instead, as in Excel, dates are numbers that are formatted as dates. Such a number date represents the number of days since January 1st, 1900. For instance, 42680 corresponds to November 6th, 2016 because there are 42680 days from January 1st, 1900 to that date. Dates in expressions can be specified using date literals. A date literal has the format #yyyy-MM-dd. For example: #2016-11-06 is the same as 42680 and corresponds to November 6th, 2016. EasyMorph can run actions in several ways: Run all not calculated actions automatically (default mode) Run all not calculated actions manually Discard all results, reload all source data, and run all actions Run all not calculated actions manually, up to a specified action Auto-run mode Auto-run mode controls whether EasyMorph runs actions automatically or manually. When Auto-run is on (default mode), EasyMorph attempts to automatically calculate all not calculated actions when the project is modified. In this mode actions are calculated in the background, without blocking the user interface. Tables and charts are updated as soon as they are calculated. If the project was modified while background calculation was running, the calculation silently restarts. Note that export actions are not calculated automatically. They are considered so-called side-effect actions because they alter, or can alter, data outside EasyMorph. Such actions should be run manually, even when Auto-run is on. Examples of other side-effect actions include "Run Program", "Database command", "Web Request", "File command". You can switch Auto-run on and off from the Main toolbar. To stop running background calculation, switch Auto-run off. If you switch Auto-run on, this will trigger background calculation again. Running actions manually When Auto-run is off or when some actions are not calculated (e.g. export actions) you can calculate them by pressing the "Run project" button, or F5. Hint: For convenience, switch off Auto-run in projects with heavy calculations, and run them manually. Re-calculating a project entirely If you need to re-run all actions in a project (e.g. because source files have changed) go to the menu "Project" and press the "Reload and run" button, or Ctrl+F5. Running up to an action Sometimes you might want to control precisely which transformations are run. In this case, you can instruct EasyMorph to run only up to a particular action (Auto-run must be off). To start calculation right-click the action and choose "Calculate" from the menu, or simply Ctrl+click the action. Dealing with errors If errors occur during running actions in Auto-run mode, the error counter will appear in the status bar. Clicking the counter opens the list of errors. Double-clicking an error message in the list will bring you to the action where the error occurred. Advanced topics Discarding action results To preserve consistency of calculations EasyMorph intelligently discards action results when one of the following happens: Properties of an action have been modified An action was inserted, moved or removed A parameter has changed Only the results of actions that are affected by the change are discarded, the rest remain intact. For instance, when an expression in an action is modified, the results of this action, and all actions that follow (depend on) it, are discarded. Results
